South Africa is often termed as the Jewel of Africa. The country has a unique and rich culture, tradition and history that has left an ever lasting mark on the hearts and minds of many. One such, must see site in South Africa, is the castle of good Hope. Located closer to the heart of the port city Cape Town, the castle of good hope is a “Star Fort” which was built on the original coast line of the Table Bay. The star shape structure of this castle, makes it eye catching and distinctive prospect that differentiates it form all the other historic mega structures round the world. This shape is so inspiring and iconic that it has lead the derivation of Cape town military (Air Force) flag logo (see cape town military tattoo). The name is well defined by the star shape, and the shape also makes you think of the very positive name “The castle of good Hope

In 1652, Jan Van Riebeeck arrived in the Cape (Colonial era) and made a fort called “The Fort de Goede Hoop The structure was although nothing like the Cape Castle today and was made out of clay and timber. The idea was first put forth during 1664, when tensions between Britain and the Netherlands rose with rumors of war being imminent; Commander Zacharias Wagenaer was instructed to build a pentagonal fortress out of stone, which we know today as “The castle of Hope The re-birth of the “Fort de Goede Hoop” took place in 1666 and 1679 by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) as a maritime replenishment station. That makes “the Castle of Good Hope” the oldest surviving colonial building in South Africa.

Apart form the unique star shape design, the castle contained within its confines a church, bakery, workshops, living quarters, offices and cells. The yellow paint on the walls was chosen due to its ability to reduce heat and glare from sunlight. However, it also facilitated the concept behind the name of this fort and rare star shape design. On 26 April 1679, the five bastions were named after the main titles of William III of Orange-Nassau: Leerdam to the west, with respectively Buuren, Katzenellenbogen, Nassau and Oranje clockwise from it. The sea-facing entrance was replaced in 1682 by current the gateway and two years later, the bell tower, situated above the main entrance was built. It contained a 670lbs bell cast in Amsterdam in 1697 by Claude Frémy. The bell could be heard some 10km away from the castle, struck the hours and was used both to warn citizens of danger and to call residents and soldiers to the Castle for important announcements. Considering the technology and architectures of that era, the castle was an ultimate excellence and architectural wonder of its time.

The castle kept on changing its roles, since its establishment. During 1678 it was the centre of civilian, administrative and military life at the Cape. Today the Castle is the seat of the military in the Cape, and houses the Castle Military Museum and Iziko Museums of Cape Town (William Fehr Collection).

The Castle of Good Hope, is also known as ‘The Castle’ by locals, many tourists call it “The Cape Castle There is an extensive display of historical military equipment, an enigmatic history of the castle, a splendid art collection and the William Fehr Collection (including old Cape Dutch furniture). Much like the older version of this fort, you will find restaurants, bar and cafs inside the castle to make your visit more memorable and classy.

The Castle of Hope is easily accessible form city centre. You may also find cheap flights to Cape Town from almost every where round the world. Although there are a million other reasons which make South Africa the “Travel Capital of the world”, yet Kruger National Park is something that serves the purpose of the biggest Jewel in the crown of this country. It is not only the main attraction of South Africa but it is also considered the flagship of South African National Parks. Let’s discuss some historical developments and also find out how to get cheap flights to Johannesburg connecting Kruger Airport.

Kruger National Park is situated in north-east of South Africa and spins along the border of Mozambique in the east, Zimbabwe in the north, and crocodile river forms the southern border to wrap this exciting vicinity. The park covers around 20,000 square kilometers and is divided in 14 different ecozones, each supporting different wildlife and species to minimize the possible encounters between carnivores and herbivores at larger intensities. The purpose and history of this park owes contributions by not only the locals but one very prominent British personal Sir. James Stevenson Hamilton.

It was during the early 18th century when the first explorer set foot in the region. He was the Dutchman François de Cuiper who led a Dutch East India Company expedition to explore. However, the expedition was attacked and driven away by local tribes-people near Gomondwane. Yet, only around 1838 Voortrekker expeditions led by Lous Trichardt and Hans van Rensburg were able to successfully establish forward outposts that lead hundreds of Europeans and farmers to come to the Lowveld. This massive human migration was mainly due to the rumors of gold and the great quantity of valuable commodities such as ivory and skins, which are no less than gold themselves in the European markets. This gave raise to hunting and trading of animal skin at larger scale, that remained unquestioned for a long time and it was only at the 11th hour when it was realized that Human intruders left drastic effect on many species and brought them at the verge of extinction. President Paul Kruger was told about the rapid destruction of wildlife in the area by hunters, after which he succeeded to persuade the Transvaal parliament to establish a protected area for the wildlife in the Lowveld region. This area named “The Sabie Game Reserve” was bordered by the Crocodile River in the south, the Sabie River in the north, the Lebombo Mountains in the east and the Drakensberg Mountains in the west, which is today the southern part of the Kruger National Park established in 1898. These reserves eventually expanded into today’s Kruger National Park. The Anglo-Boer War stopped any further development of the reserve, but the British, after winning the war, proceeded with the plan to develop the Sabie Game Reserve and gave the task to major James Stevenson-Hamilton in 1902 to protect the animals against hunters, ivory poachers and cattle farmers. The Park was opened to the public in 1927 for visitors to view animals and plant life in an area where they are protected. Lately, in peaceful times, James Stevenson-Hamilton was appointed as the first park warden. He spent the next 40 years protecting what the war had destroyed. His actions are no doubt an ever-living contribution to the Kruger National Park’s current existence and expansion. The Kruger National Park is a living memorial to President Paul Kruger and those who have upheld his vision of a protected wilderness reserve which will forever remind us of that which we are so dangerously close to loosing.

Flights To Johannesburg
The easiest and most convenient way to get in and experience the adventure of Kruger National park, is to book yourself some good cheap flights to Johannesburg, available at large with airline such as Qatar Airways, Etihad and British Airways. From Johannesburg International Airport daily flights operate to airports near Kruger National Park.

Airports nearby the KNP are:

Phalaborwa Airport is located 2 km from the Phalaborwa gate of the KNP and serves as a entry route for the northern camps such as Letaba, Olifants, Punda Maria and Shingwedzi. The airport is well connected to Johannesburg International Airport with two flights per day during the week and a single flight on Saturday and Sunday.Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport receives flights from Johannesburg International Airport, Durban, Cape Town and Vilanculos.

During the past decade, Ghana has emerged and evolved on the map of the world as a prominent and largely visited African Country. Like the rest of Africa, Ghana is also renowned for its rich tradition, prominent culture and colorful festivals. One such festival that attracts the attentions of many European tourists and media is the”Homowa Festival”.

The unique and most impressive thing about Ghanaian’s or any African nation is that the people are so strong, so bold, so confident and so strong willed that nothing could ever stand in their way. If you turn back the pages of history and take a glance at the wounded endeavors, from Hunger, famine to salvation, there has been a series of hardships that the people of Africa have stood before and raised above. The history and festivals like “Homowo” are trails and secrets of the strength still visible in all young and old alike. As the name of this festival indicates “hooting on hunger”.

The word Homowo owes its derivation to two separate words “Homo” meaning “Hunger” and “wo” meaning “sleep”. The word “Homowo” means to hoot and jeer at hunger. It tells the story of the people who were not scared of the deadliest of natural disasters and fieriest of enemies. The tradition of Homowo started with a period of hunger leading to famine due to failure of the seasonal rains needed by crops in the Greater Accra Region, where the Ghana people predominately dwell. When the rains returned to normal, the Ghanaians celebrated by creating the Homowo festival hence it name and meanings are the traces of the event that gave birth to this colorful festival.

The colorful festival of Homowo is celebrated every year with full enthusiasm and spreads a sheer cheerfulness through out the country. It is also a means of keeping alive the traditions and values of true people of Ghana. The young and old are entwined with the rich drumming and dance traditions that were once a part of every day of life. The festival is characterized by rituals such as the sprinkling of “Kpokpoi” (the festival dish) to the gods and ancestors for spiritual protection, procession of twins through the principal streets, traditional drumming and dancing and general merry-making. A month before the celebration, there is a ban of noise making. A climax of the festival is that from 12 noon to 6:00pm any woman, no matter the status, should accept a hug from a man on the festival street. And this makes it a very interesting, open hearted and joyful event.

The festival starts every year with the month of May with the planting of crops just before the rainy season starts. The musicians and dancers of Homowo are living examples of the strength of African performing arts. The repertoire, featuring the yesterday, today and tomorrow of Ghanaian cultural arts, creates an acoustic and visual history of Ghana and brings the spirit alive in every Ghaian.

During May, when the festival is at its peak, many cheap flights are available as it is a low season. However, the best deals are still with only a handful of airline like Egypt, Ghana International or KLM . For more details visit

The republic of Ghana is a vibrant country located on the West Coast of Africa. The Capital of Ghana “Accra” is hub of many cheap flights to Ghana. Accra rims along the coastal line of South Atlantic Ocean. With official language “English” and 25 ethnic languages, Ghana is a small country with rich traditions and revered cultures. Ghana covers an estimated area of 238,500 square kilometers with a population of 22 million people. It is also calculated that there are over one hundred ethnic groups that have contributed to the 25 different and unique languages spoken in the country, the official language however, is a legacy of British colonial rule.

The Republic of Ghana is neighbored by Togo in the east, Cote D’Ivore to the west, Burkina Faso to the North and Gulf of Guinea, South Atlantic Ocean to the South. The word Ghana means “Warrior King” and was the source for the name “Gulf of Guinea” given to the West African cost line. The word “Warrior King” – “Ghana” best reflects the country’s strength and determination that enabled Ghana to become the first country in Sub Saharan Africa to gain Independence in 1957. After leading the country for nine years, the nation’s founding president, Kwame Nkrumah was overthrown in a coup d’etat in 1966. After Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana was ruled by a series of military despots with intermittent experiments with democratic rule, most of which were curtailed by military takeovers. The latest and most enduring democratic reign started in 1992 and it is what has gained recognition for Ghana as a leading democracy in Africa. President Barack Obama’s visit in July has further brought the country in lime light.

Ghana has often been referred to as an “Island of Peace” in one of the most anarchic regions on earth. It is also one of the biggest reasons why so many flights operate daily from UK to Ghana almost throughout the year. It is also predicted that the recent discovery of oil in the Gulf of Guinea can make Ghana an important oil producer and exporter in the next few years. Ghana was formerly known as the “Country of Gold”, as it is a large exporter of gold however the country’s economy is dominated by agriculture, which employs about 40 percent of the working population. Ghana is also one of the leading exporters of cocoa in the world. There are significant developments in the democratic republic of Ghana that may evolve the country as the strongest economy in African continent in a few more decades; the major credit however will go to the current government.

One major industry for any country to progress in leaps and bonds is “Tourism”. Major revenues of several developed countries such as UAE (Dubai), Newzealand and South Africa are earned through rapid tourism. The claimed “Island of Peace” Ghana has very bright chances of progress if the tourism can catch the developer’s eye. Ghana has a coastal location that can be very attractive for beach lovers especially in December Holidays. There are several other tourist attractions such as the castles and wild life parks with canopy walk. Most of the major international airlines fly into and from the international airport in Accra, the capital of Ghana. The country’s flagship carrier “Ghana International Airways” is also on the move of development and offers direct yet cheap flights to Accra. The rich wealth of this “black gold, also makes Nigeria the “second strongest economy” in African Continent. Besides having an extraordinary positioning along the coastal line of Atlantic Ocean, Nigeria is not a magnetic beach attraction for European tourists, but the country is on a path of steady growth and developments by making the best use of its resources. Geographically, Nigeria rims along the Atlantic Ocean to the South, borders with Cameroon to the southeast, Chad to the northeast, Niger to the north and Benin to the west.

There are four major International Airports in Nigeria to cater the needs of the ever increased flights to Nigeria:

(1)	Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport – Abuja

(3)	Murtala Muhammad International Airport – Lagos
The Murtala Muhammad International Airport in Lagos (Code: LOS), is the busiest airport in Nigeria and draws a huge volume of air traffic specially flights from UK during school and national holidays. The cheap flights to Lagos are many; almost all major airlines are carriers to Lagos and operate on daily basis from almost all UK airports. The prominent names include Afriqiyah Airways, Arik Air, Air Morocco, KLM, Air France, British Airways and so on. The best deals however, or the cheapest flights to Lagos are operated by Iberia, Turkish Airways and Alitalia with surprising fares as low as 300 GBP!

(4)	Port Harcourt International Airport – Port Harcourt
It even has a nick name “the garden city”, by dint of its greenery and splendor. The major airport, Port Harcourt Airport (Code: PHC) caters the need of International flights with Lufthansa Airways and Virgin Nigeria being the cheapest flights to Port Harcourt.

The above stated four major cities and their International Airports are facing a much increased air traffic these days as more and more international airlines are developing interests in launching their new routes to Nigeria.

Africa is the second largest continent after Asia and is reckoned round the world by dint of its diverse landscapes, dense forests, rich culture and impressive history. It has amazing wealth of natural wonders, and serves as world’s second most traveled destination. Let’s here discuss the African countries that have made the European tourists their aficionado.

SOTHERN AFRICA
The world gets its tourism capital from Africa; yes “South Africa”, the crown country of Southern region in Africa is the international tourism capital of the world.

South Africa attractions need no introduction, the wild life in Kruger National park, cape wineries, castles and many other UNESCO world heritage sites make South Africa a “must-travel “country. It also has a vast history of hosting football and cricket world cups, concerts and world’s most eye-catching events. Besides, being the richest tourism destination, cheap flights to South Africa are easily available. The hub of most Airlines is Johannesburg but also cheap flights to Cape Town are offered by Qatar Airways every now and than. Other prominent countries in the Southern region include Botswana, Namibia, Swaziland, Lesotho and Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe is also one of the most visited countries especially where flights from UK are concerned (capital: Harare). Victoria falls, the world’s one of the most famous tourist destination is located in Zimbabwe. There are many daily and weekly cheap flights to Zimbabwe with direct and indirect carriers that fly from anywhere in UK to Harare. One prominent and only direct flight to Zimbabwe, Harare is offered by Air Zimbabwe, the flagship carrier of the country.

Namibia however is less traveled county as far as flights form UK or US are concerned yet, still there is a large number of a Namibian national or settlers who make the Windhoek International Airport very busy near national holidays and Christmas. One big reason for being traveled than other Southern African countries is that there aren’t any direct flights to Namibia and the flagship carrier Air Namibia flies indirect in cooperation with British Airways. Cheap flights to Namibia are available with Ethiopian Airways, Kenyan Airways and KLM.

EAST AFRICA
The nationals who live at the border of Indian Ocean and red sea form one of the most beautiful regions in African Continent. East Africa is wealthiest in having the rarest flora and fauna. Popular countries in East Africa include Madagascar, Tanzania, Uganda, Malawi, Seychelles, Mauritius, Kenya and Ethiopia.

The Islands of Mauritius are a luxurious and elite Holiday destination round the world. The flights to Mauritius are largely operated by Air Mauritius and certain other airlines such as Air France also offer cheap flights to Mauritius.
Seychelles is an elite and foremost holiday destination that remained a comfy spot for the rich only for a long period of time. But now Air France, KLM and Qatar offer fares as low as 300+ and amazingly cheap flights to Seychelles.
Kenya & Ethiopia are not only traveled by the natives or beach lovers (Mombassa beach – Kenya) but also form a major connecting point for flights to almost all regions in African Continent. Cheap flights to Kenya (Capital Nairobi) are offered by Kenyan Airways which is the flagship carrier as well as the only direct flight to Nairobi. Ethiopia is served by the national carrier Ethiopian airways that not only provides cheap flights to Ethiopia but also to Accra, Lagos and neighbored countries.

WEST AFRICA
There are about 15 countries in Western Africa including Cameroon, Gambia, Ghana, Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo. The major air traffic in western Africa is drawn towards Ghana.

Ghana is a progressing country in West African region along the tropical Atlantic coastal region and very cheap flights to Ghana (capital Accra) are available with the flagship carrier Ghana International or indirect flights with Afriqiyah Airways.

Nigeria What keeps Lagos, Nigeria a busy airport is the huge number of travelers from the United Kingdom who are mostly students and jobians. Nigeria does not have a national carrier yet; cheap flights to Nigeria operate every day with Air France, KLM and Iberia Airways.

Cameroon
Duala is the capital of Cameroon, a comparatively less popular destination in the Western Region of Africa. Cheap flights to Cameroon are available only on alternate days with Afriqiayah Airways.

NORTH AFRICA
The countries that rim the southern shore of the Mediterranean Sea form the Northern African region. Egypt, Morocco, Libya, Algeria and Tunisia are the major countries of North Africa.

Egypt needs no introduction. The pyramids speak for themselves to tell the number of tourist buzzing around this wonder of the world. Unlike the expensive tourism in Egypt, the national airline, Egypt airways offers very cheap flights to Egypt (capital: Cairo) on daily basis. Egypt Airways also offers very cheap and reasonable fares for Accra, Lagos and other African Countries.

Morocco, another North African country may not be recognized by the country name but Casablanca, the historic capital city can refresh our memories. The Moroccan airlines however, Air Morocco is one fine and cheap flights to Morocco as well as a cheap connecting flight for neighboring courtiers.

Libya is in general a less visited country in Africa yet, the national airline Afriqiyah Airways serves as a major cheap flights to Libya, Ghana, Lagos, Cameroon and neighbored countries.

SAHARAN AFRICA
The mostly desert and often landlocked countries, Chad, Mali, Sudan, Niger and Mauritania span the Sahara Desert and form the much barren Saharan Africa.

2009 was full of great cheap flights to Ghana offers from prices as low as 356 GBP with Afriqiyah Airways or as high as 419 GBP for direct flights to Accra Ghana with Ghana International. The cheap indirect flights, like Egypt Airways were also leading in the race of cheapest ticket offers by offering below 400 GBP fares inclusive of taxes. However, as we moved towards the peak season, there had been considerable price hikes. Where the inflation graph was descending in major industries, the travel industry was facing the reverse. In the International Air Transport Association conference in Kuala Lumpur July 2009, it was further highlighted that where the fuel prices have been decreased for automobiles the high-octane airplane fuels have become more expensive. Certain airlines, like the Belleview airways, suffered serious consequences and had to terminate its operation in July temporarily. The reason was that the purchasing power of public reduced where as the costs of fuels went up, the airline had to offer flights in a reasonable fare in order to earn revenue good enough to continue operations. Yet, the turnover was not as expected.

Contrary to the flight situation in July, December flights went pretty well. Besides the depressing news that the flagship carrier of Ghana and the only direct flight, Ghana International Airways will go bankrupt, nearly all economy class tickets got sold away. The result was positive of course, and the airline continued its operations without any disruption. This has further enabled the airline industry analyst to predict that “if Ghana International successfully operated this December, (as it already is), It will become a strong competitive for many other carriers”. People already prefer to travel with Ghana International known as the GIA flight as the fares are not only the cheapest but also more convenient than going via Egypt or Tripoli. Besides that, the ratio of complains is also far less, there hadn’t been cases of baggage loss or schedule change that can be a traveler’s nightmare.

As resulted from the intense observation of cheap flights to Accra, Ghana 2009, it is forecasted that the flight prices are likely to go up in 2010. However, the difference may not be more than 50-100 GBP. It is already seen that since July the taxes of certain airline have gone up between 5 to 15 GBP. People are much more aware now of the low and peak seasons and therefore the demand of seats remains nearly the same almost throughout the year even in the months like February or October. However, only about 3 years back Feb or October used to be the least demanded dates.

What can be suggested is the old method of saving …”the sooner the better”. For people who are buying next year tickets in advance or towards the end of December, will be more defiantly getting cheaper flights to Ghana, in comparison to those waiting on last minute good deals.

Some agencies, that are the contract holders or GSA (General Sales Agents) for Ghana or Accra in specific, will also be providing promotional airfares and cheap flights to Accra.
